Australia’s second largest commercial laundry, operated by Spotless in Dudley Park, has become one of the most environmentally friendly laundries in Australia after installing leading water re-use technologies.
New water reticulation and filtering systems save a million litres of water a week – or 50 million litres of water a year. The water reuse system has cut detergent usage and energy costs by five per cent.
The Aquamiser water reuse system filters lint, sand and other particles from the laundry cycle, enabling water to be reintroduced into the wash cycle. Heat from the re-used water is maintained, further reducing heating costs.
The Spotless laundry in Dudley Park processes 260,000 kilograms of linen and garments each week for more than 800 South Australian customers including public and private hospitals, aged care facilities, hospitality providers, and retail and food processing companies.
General Manager of South Australia Laundries, Mr Michael Morrissey, said: “Spotless is committed to continually improving its environmental footprint across all operations and is proud of the inroads made in water saving at all of its laundries, particularly in South Australia.”
“Our customers are very water conscious and have a strong desire to do the right thing by the environment. To show them how much water and energy we are saving has been received very positively,” he said.
“We continually look for ways to reduce water usage and environmental impact, through new technologies and processes. The Aquamiser technology makes good business sense and is also good for the environment,” he said.
“Adelaide, like many other parts of Australia, is experiencing severe water shortages so it is prudent for all businesses to take a good look at their operations to see what they can do to use water more efficiently.”
“We are proud that the water and energy savings at Dudley Park have occurred without any compromise to the quality standards expected by our customers.”
The Federal Government contributed $175,000 to the project via the Community Water Grants scheme.
Spotless laundries and the environment
Spotless commercial laundries have reduced water usage by 50 per cent over the past 10 years in Australia. This year alone, around 170 million litres of water have been saved. Energy efficiencies have resulted in a six per cent reduction in energy consumption.
