In a business that processes 90,000 tonnes of laundry per year, sometimes operating up to 24 hours per day, it takes commitment and innovation to make a real environmental difference.
We have invested in establishing water and energy recovery systems in all of our long-term facilities. The results achieved to date include a 35 per cent reduction in water usage and a 10 per cent saving in energy. It is expected that further gains will be made as this technology is continually upgraded.
The environmental benefits to be derived from smarter equipment, working practices and processing techniques continue to be a high priority and focus for our laundries. Across all of our laundry plants, 170 million litres of water is saved each year, proving the success of our environmental programs and furthering our commitment to sustainability.
Environmental Initiatives
Our Laundry Services work with water authorities in Australia and New Zealand to identify significant savings through our investment in the latest water saving technology for our laundries. This is matched with genuine ongoing process improvement and careful management techniques. The following recent achievements have been acknowledged and rewarded by multiple state governments.
- The New South Wales Government’s Water Savings Fund has supported Spotless with three custom-designed Aquamiser systems. These have been installed to reclaim water and waste heat from our laundry washing equipment - estimated to save 100 million litres of water a year and reduce energy use by 5 per cent.
- Federal Government support in South Australia funded the installation of an Aquamiser to recycle water and heat during the washing process. Water consumption has reduced by an impressive 25 per cent. The plant processes 250,000 kilograms of linen per week, translating to a saving of 50 million litres of water per year.
