Our history

We began as a small dry cleaning store in Melbourne. It was 1946.

Our early days

1946: A single dry cleaning business opens in Fitzroy, Melbourne.

1957: The business incorporates as Spotless Pty Ltd.

The 1960s

1960: Our stores are expanding rapidly throughout Victoria and NSW.

1961: We become publicly listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. We have 450 retail outlets, 11 dry cleaning plants, one general laundry - and a shoe repair factory.

1967: Spotless employs 1,452 people. We operate 831 retail outlets. And 41 factories.

1968: We establish a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise from the USA - as well as franchises for Red Barn and Crusty’s Hot Break Kitchens.

The 1970s

1970: We expand into NZ through Nationwide Food Service.

1971: Spotless buys a garment hanger supply business to meet the needs of clothing manufacturers and retailers.

1977: Spotless buys 50% of Ensign - Australia’s biggest workwear and linen rental firm.

The 1980s

1984: We diversify into food by purchasing Nationwide Food Services and O’Brien Catering.

1988: Spotless acquires Lomey Manufacturing - a plastics injection moulding company in North Carolina, USA.

1988: We win the fast food contract for World Expo, Brisbane.

The 1990s

1993: Spotless purchases Mustard Catering - a boutique caterer in WA.

1994: We diversify into grounds maintenance by acquiring Grass Australia.

1999: Spotless acquires Australian and NZ support services business, P&O. This acquisition adds property and facilities management, cleaning services and building and asset maintenance to our growing portfolio.

The 2000s

2000: Spotless has its first Olympics experience providing cleaning and housekeeping to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

2001: We acquire Victorian boutique caterer, EPICURE Catering.

2004: Spotless wins its first Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract with New South Wales schools. 

2005: Spotless launches a multimillion dollar OHS program - safety@spotless. 

2008: We acquire Alliance Catering in Victoria and NSW.

The 2010s

2010: Spotless is listed on the NZ Stock Exchange.

2010: We acquire CE Property Services – Cleanevent and CleanDomain.

2011: Spotless signs the Royal Adelaide Hospital PPP contract – the largest contract in our history to this date.

2012: Spotless purchased by private equity group, Pacific Equity Partners. Delists from both the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges, and sells all international divisions.

2014: Spotless admitted to official list of the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) under the code SPO. 

2014: Spotless launches TechGuard Security brand in Australia.

2015: Spotless acquires Australia's leading air-conditioning and mechanical services provider, AE Smith.

2015: Spotless acquires Utility Services Group (USG).

Today

Spotless now employs over 36,000 staff throughout Australia and NZ.
