In early January, much of the South-West region of Western Australia saw major bushfires, leading to the closure of all transport routes in an out of the district.
These closures included access to the Alcoa Wagerup Refinery, where Alliance provides canteen catering to a work force of approximately 1000 people.
Alliance and Alcoa staff who live in the communities throughout this regional district were subjected to major evacuations of whole towns that occurred over five days.
With 100 Alcoa essential personnel tasked maintaining safe operating levels at the refinery, Alliance Operations Manager, Steve Drake, and Head Chef at Alcoa Pinjarra, Mark Timms, coordinated meals and provisions to travel to essential personnel when possible.
Steve and Mark ensured meals travelled on Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and police convoys whenever they were able to gain safe access to the site. Provisions were delivered from the Alliance Alcoa Pinjarra Kitchen with short notice and ever-changing requirements due to access restrictions and the requests and decisions coming from Alcoa, the police and DFES.
Thank you to Steve and Mark’s skilled organisation, determination to help, and the entire Alliance team’s proactive attitude to helping those in need.
