The International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney), Australia’s first fully-integrated exhibition space opened its doors in December 2016, instantly transforming the Asia Pacific region’s corporate and public events landscape.
Built with over 15,000 tonnes of steel, enough concrete to fill 40 Olympic-sized swimming pools and covering 250,000 sqm across three city blocks, the ICC Sydney boasts three tiered theatres including an 8000-seat theatre, 70 meeting rooms, Australia’s largest ballroom and exhibition space and the biggest kitchen in the southern hemisphere.
Spotless is facility manager for the venue and surrounding precinct. Our role provides hard facility management services, repair and replacement, high level cleaning, grounds maintenance and horticulture, art conservation and utilities management – a task considered to be of the same scale as the impressive magnitude of the venue.
As facility manager, we aim to run the venue at optimal resource, environmental and cost efficiencies. “We’ve implemented a ground-breaking operational energy model across the convention, exhibition and entertainment facilities to understand the full energy use of each individual space, and capture accurate information for our carbon reporting,” says our Facility Director Jane Frewen.
Spotless also monitors and provides maintenance for the solar cells that make up the 520-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) array which generates about five per cent of the venue’s power and partnering with Sydney University to improve thermal control and energy usage of the event spaces.
Tens of thousands of assets across the three main buildings fall under our remit, including mechanical plants, chillers, air handling units, as well as kitchen equipment, furniture, carpet and fittings. A new barcoding system provides real time information about each asset, allowing the facilities management team to respond quickly to any issues.
“With a catalogue of more than 60,000 items, we can keep stock of every aspect of an asset’s lifecycle and can access the history of all faults – large or small — associated with each plant.” Jane says.
With 35,500 square metres of exhibition space, ICC Sydney is capable of collectively hosting more than 12,000 delegates and holding multiple large conferences and exhibitions concurrently.
Spotless has been part of the ICC Sydney project since bid phase in 2012 and have been a part of the evolution of the facilities from their original concept.
