Northern Hospital Major Infrastructure Upgrade

The 300-bed public Northern Hospital in Epping is one of Melbourne’s major acute treatment centres and houses the State’s busiest hospital emergency departments, treating nearly 70,000 patients annually

Northern Hospital identified the need to ensure robust power supply reliability for their essential services during power outages from the grid, requiring a major upgrade of the existing infrastructure to a higher capacity backup system.

As Head Contractor, Nuvo Group carried out the decommissioning of the existing 750kVA generator and backup circuits, installation of two new 1100kVA generators, construction and installation of a new weatherproof distribution board, new generator control and Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) unit, replacement of existing infrastructure such as mains and submains, switchboard upgrade, and integration with existing electrical infrastructure. All works took place over eight months, while the hospital remained operational with minimal shutdowns and with patients experiencing no change in hospital function.

Northern Hospital now has additional power supply capacity not only for their existing operation but also to accommodate further demand from their essential services in the event of a power outage.

A tailored Nuvo Critical Works Plan was delivered and executed to tightly manage the project program in line with hospital schedules and operating hours. Any disruption to staff, patients and visitors was to be minimised. The project was delivered over eight months on schedule with patients experiencing no change in hospital function.

Northern Hospital now has additional power supply capacity not only for their existing operation but also to accommodate further demand from their essential services in the event of a power outage.
